We will install a VNC server if the user requests it. Usually, this is done at system setup. We will do this a sensible number of times, but if the user keeps reinstalling their OS, we won't. We can give them these instructions instead.

  1. apt-get update
  2. apt-get install gnome
  3. apt-get install tightvncserver
  4. Create a new user using adduser (use username gigatux if none is provided)
  5. su gigatux
  6. Run tightvncserver as the above user and connect to see if it works
  7. Update /etc/rc.local (use nano if there is no other text editor available) and add the following line before exit 0: su gigatux -c tightvncserver
  8. For some reason, the default keyboard mappings are wrong. Follow the instructions at Ubuntu Forums to set up the keyboard mappings.
  9. Email/ticket reply to the user:
 Hi,

I have now installed a tight vnc server with the Gnome desktop running.

Connect to 109.169.23.151:1 (which is actually port 5901).

Additionally, your root password is now 'akrmaoqa' and your desktop is running under the username 'gigatux' with password 'k9tj3smd'.

 Thanks.
