Adding, removing or changing IP addresses

The default policy on free IP address allocations is available on the FAQ pages. When performing IP address maintenance, we need to do three things:

  • (if adding or changing) Determine what IP address can be used
  • Record the IP addresses in WHMCS
  • Update DTC's view of the IP addresses
  • Change the Xen back end

Determine what IP address can be used

DTC has the overriding view on what IP addresses are available for use.

Firstly, you must ensure that the IP address to add is on the same subnet as any existing IP addresses. It is possible to span IP addresses across multiple subnets, but a different Xen interface will be needed, and you will need to make sure that the server is routed for the subnets in question.

In DTC, go to DTC General Configuration -> VPS servers and then click on Edit IPs for the server this user is on. Choose an IP address that has the Available checkbox set to Yes. Preferably, choose an IP address that does not have a VPS xen number or if this is not possible, choose one where other IP addresses are already set for this VPS xen number.

Record the IP addresses in WHMCS

In the user's product, ensure that the values in the Dedicated IP and Additional IPs boxes all match up with the new values.

Update DTC's view of the IP addresses

Back on DTC's VPS servers page, change the VPS xen number to match the user's VPS number and set Available to No. Ensure that you click on the green tick to the right of this IP address.

Change the Xen back end

  • Log into the physical server that this user's VPS is on.
  • Edit /etc/xen/xenXX where X is the user's VPS.
  • Change the vif line in this file appropriately.
  • Inform the user that he needs to turn his VPS off and on again (a reboot will not suffice) so that his new IP will be routed.
  • If the user requires it, configure the new IP address inside his domU by logging into his VPS.
